Tallow Beach Byron Bay: The Long Beach Most Visitors Walk Past

Tallow Beach ranked fourth in Australia's 2026 Best Beaches list. It's 7km of undeveloped coastline directly south of Byron Bay , and most people visiting Byron never make it there.

Tallow Beach Byron Bay: The Long Beach Most Visitors Walk Past

Byron Bay's main beach and Clarkes Beach get the crowds. Wategos Beach gets the surf crowd and the Instagram traffic. Tallow Beach, which ranked fourth in Tourism Australia's 2026 Best Beaches list, runs for 7 kilometres to the south of the cape and gets a fraction of the foot traffic despite being a better beach by several measures.

It rated 4.7 stars from 20 BeachCheck reviews , reviews that consistently mention the lack of crowds, the dramatic scenery, and the sense of being somewhere genuinely remote despite being a short walk from one of Australia's busiest beach towns.

What Tallow Beach Is Like

The beach starts at the base of Cape Byron headland and runs south to the Arakwal National Park boundary near Brunswick Heads. The entire stretch is backed by the Arakwal National Park and Cape Byron State Conservation Area , no development, no beachfront cafes, no lifeguard towers past the first few hundred metres.

The surf is more powerful than Byron Bay's main beach. Tallow faces south-east and picks up more swell than the protected bays on the north side of the cape. It's a better surfing beach than Byron Main Beach for intermediate to advanced surfers, with consistent beach break along most of the length.

Swimming is fine in the northern section near the cape, where there's some protection from the headland. The further south you walk, the more exposed it gets , exercise judgment about conditions before swimming in the middle or southern sections.

Getting There

Walking track from Byron Bay: The Cape Byron Walking Track connects the Byron Bay town area to Tallow Beach. Start from Clarke Beach or the Cape Byron Lighthouse area. The track takes 45-60 minutes each way and passes the lighthouse and several lookout points with views over the coast. The descent to Tallow Beach is on the southern side of the cape.

Direct road access: Alcorn Street in Byron Bay leads to a small car park at the northern end of Tallow Beach. It's about 2km south of the Byron Bay CBD.

Broken Head: The southern end of Tallow Beach is accessible from Broken Head Nature Reserve, off Broken Head Road about 8km south of Byron Bay. There's a small car park at Broken Head Holiday Park.

The Cape Byron Walk

Wategos Beach, Byron Bay

The walk from Byron Bay to Tallow Beach via the Cape Byron Lighthouse is worth doing in its own right. The lighthouse is Australia's most easterly point and the views from the headland are clear on most days , north to Queensland, south down the coast to Ballina, and offshore to the horizon.

Dolphins are frequently visible from the cape, particularly in the morning. Humpback whales pass during the migration (June-November, going north in winter, returning south in spring). The whale watching from Cape Byron headland is among the best from land anywhere on the east coast.

Why Tallow Gets Missed

The answer is simple: Byron Bay's reputation is built around its town, its markets, and its main beach. Most visitors coming to Byron are there for the vibe of the town, not to walk 7km of undeveloped coastline. Tallow Beach requires either a 45-minute walk or a deliberate drive to reach, which filters out most day-trippers.

This is good news if you're looking for a beach experience rather than a social one. Tallow Beach on a weekday , including in peak summer , will have fewer people than Byron Main Beach at any time of year.

The Rest of the Byron Area

Clarkes Beach is the northern side of the cape, directly adjacent to Byron Bay town. Protected by the headland, it's calmer and better for families with young children. The Byron Bay Surf Life Saving Club operates here.

Wategos Beach (⭐4.8) is a small, sheltered bay on the eastern face of the cape. It's popular with longboarders and bodyboarders due to the smaller, more manageable waves. The kiosk at Wategos is one of the better coffee options near the beaches.

Little Wategos is 200 metres further around the headland from Wategos. Smaller, harder to find, genuinely quiet most of the time.

Belongil Beach (⭐4.7) runs north of Byron Bay town. Less famous than Tallow but similarly long and undeveloped. It's a nude beach in some sections.

Lennox Head Beach (⭐4.8, 191 reviews) is 20 minutes south of Byron Bay. Known for its right-hand point break , one of the better surf spots on the NSW north coast , and a quieter, more local feel than Byron itself.

When to Go

Byron Bay has a genuine reason to visit year-round. The peak season is November-March, when the weather is warmest (water temperature 24-26°C) and the town is at maximum capacity. January school holidays are the busiest period.

Shoulder (April-May and September-October): The best combination of weather and manageable crowds. The ocean is still warm in April-May. September brings the start of whale season.

Winter (June-August): Byron Bay in winter has clear, cool days and excellent whale watching. The surf is more consistent. Accommodation prices drop significantly. The town is quieter but still has restaurants and markets operating.

What the 2026 Ranking Recognises

Tallow Beach was included in the top 10 because it represents something increasingly rare: a long, healthy, undeveloped beach within easy reach of a major tourism centre. The backing national park has protected it from development that would have otherwise taken over the beachfront. The result is a coastal experience that contrasts completely with Byron Bay's busy town centre despite being a 10-minute walk away.
