Hargraves Beach: What to Know Before You Visit

Hargraves Beach sits on the Central Coast at 4.7 stars across 84 reviews. Here's what makes it different from the patrolled beaches nearby, and which spots suit different swimmers.

Hargraves Beach is one of the Central Coast's quieter spots, wedged between Budgewoi Lake and the ocean on the Norah Head peninsula. It sits at 4.7 stars across 84 reviews on BeachCheck, which is solid for a beach with no lifeguard patrol. The draw is the natural rock platform and sheltered headlands that keep the water calmer than the open surf beaches nearby. This guide covers Hargraves and four nearby Central Coast beaches for comparison.

Hargraves Beach

Hargraves Beach

Rating: 4.7 stars (84 reviews) | Lifeguard: No patrol | Location: Hargraves, Central Coast NSW

Hargraves Beach is backed by grassy parkland and framed by rocky headlands on both sides, which shelters the main swimming area from the wind and swell that hits the exposed beaches north of Norah Head. The rock platform that extends from the southern headland is the main reason people come here specifically. At low tide it's walkable and the pools are shallow enough for children, while snorkellers find good visibility from the absence of stirred-up sand.

Because there's no lifeguard patrol, you swim here at your own judgement. The water is generally calm, but conditions do change. Check the BeachCheck app for water quality and sea state before going if you're bringing young children.

Parking is off Pacific Road. There's a small car park and grassy area with picnic tables. The beach is about 90 minutes north of Sydney via the M1 and takes roughly 10 minutes from Budgewoi township. It's not a beach where you'll find takeaway or a kiosk, so bring everything you need.

Best for: Snorkelling, rock pooling, families wanting quieter water. Not suitable for inexperienced swimmers in anything above 0.5m swell.

Soldiers Beach

Soldiers Beach

Rating: 4.8 stars (206 reviews) | Lifeguard: Yes (seasonal) | Location: Norah Head, Central Coast NSW

Soldiers Beach is the patrolled alternative if you want lifeguard cover. It rates 4.8 stars across 206 reviews, the highest review count of any beach in the immediate area. The beach faces northeast, which gives it consistent but generally manageable surf. The lifeguard patrol runs on weekends and school holidays during summer.

Parking is available and there are toilets on site. The beach sits about 3km south of Hargraves and is easier to access from Norah Head township. If you're travelling with children who are confident swimmers, Soldiers Beach is the better base: you get ocean swimming with backup.

Norah Head Beach

Norah Head Beach

Rating: 4.8 stars (142 reviews) | Lifeguard: Yes (seasonal) | Location: Norah Head, Central Coast NSW

Norah Head Beach sits immediately below the Norah Head Lighthouse, which is one of the oldest working lighthouses on the east coast and visible from most of the beach. The beach itself is small and backed by clifftop vegetation, making it feel more enclosed than Soldiers Beach. It's patrolled during summer months and rated 4.8 stars across 142 reviews.

The lighthouse is worth the 10-minute walk from the car park. It operates as a holiday cottage rental, and the elevated position gives you a clear view of whether any surf is running before you walk down. The beach faces east and catches the morning light well.

Lakes Beach

Lakes Beach

Rating: 4.7 stars (67 reviews) | Lifeguard: Yes (seasonal) | Location: Central Coast NSW

Lakes Beach is a patrolled beach with a playground on site, which makes it the clearest family option in this cluster. It rates 4.7 stars across 67 reviews and has parking, toilets, and a play area. The beach is sheltered by rocky headlands that keep the swimming area calm on most days. A patrolled beach with a playground in one location is less common than you'd expect on the Central Coast, so it gets busy on summer weekends.

Budgewoi Beach

Budgewoi Beach

Rating: 4.6 stars (73 reviews) | Lifeguard: No patrol | Dog-friendly: Yes | Location: Budgewoi, Central Coast NSW

Budgewoi Beach is the dog-friendly option in this group and the closest to Budgewoi township. It rates 4.6 stars across 73 reviews. The beach sits on the edge of Budgewoi Lake inlet, which gives it naturally calmer water compared to the exposed ocean beaches to the north. There's parking and toilets on site.

Dogs are welcome here, which is worth noting because most of the beaches on the Norah Head peninsula either prohibit dogs or restrict them to specific areas and times. If you're visiting with a dog, Budgewoi is the practical choice.

Getting Here

The Norah Head peninsula is about 90 minutes north of Sydney. From the M1, take the Doyalson exit and follow signs toward Budgewoi and Norah Head. There's no train to this area. The nearest station is Wyong (about 20 minutes by car), from which you'd need a taxi or rideshare. Most visitors drive.
