Bar Beach Newcastle: What to Know Before You Visit

Bar Beach sits close to Newcastle CBD with rock pools, consistent surf, and a local crowd. Here's what each Newcastle ocean beach actually offers.

Bar Beach is about 3 kilometres southwest of Newcastle CBD, sitting between Dixon Park and Merewether along a stretch of ocean beaches that runs for roughly 5 kilometres. This guide covers Bar Beach and the other ocean beaches in the area so you can pick the right one for what you're after.

Newcastle's ocean beaches are all on the same exposed coastline, but they suit different visitors. Bar Beach gets the local crowd. Nobbys and Newcastle Beach are closer to the city centre and more accessible by foot. Merewether is the one that surf-oriented visitors tend to target.

Bar Beach

Bar Beach Newcastle

Bar Beach sits at 4.6 stars across 44 reviews on BeachCheck. The beach takes its name from a rock formation at the southern end called The Bar, which creates a natural pool in calmer conditions. There is free parking directly on Bar Beach Road and a cafe within walking distance.

The beach has a surf club (Bar Beach Surf Life Saving Club) and is patrolled during peak season. The rock pool at the southern end is usable when swell is under 1.5 metres. In larger swells the rocks make swimming the main beach the safer option.

The break here is a beach break that works on most swells, which means it gets busier after storms and good groundswells. Locals tend to know when it's working. The beach itself is around 500 metres long and less crowded than Merewether or Nobbys on most weekdays.

Getting there: 3 kilometres from Newcastle CBD, roughly 10 minutes by car. Street parking on Bar Beach Road fills by 9am on sunny weekends. Bus route 224 runs from Newcastle Interchange to Bar Beach.

Merewether Beach

Merewether Beach Newcastle

Merewether Beach rates 4.7 stars across 1,800 reviews, which is the highest review volume of any Newcastle ocean beach on BeachCheck. It is the longest of the Newcastle ocean beaches, around 1.1 kilometres of sand, and is the main surf beach in the area.

The break at Merewether typically runs as a series of peaks across the beach. It works best on a south to southeast swell, which Newcastle gets regularly from April through September. The beach is patrolled and has a lifesaving club with equipment hire.

Merewether Ocean Baths sit at the southern end of the beach. These are ocean baths rather than a pool, rated 4.7 stars across 1,333 reviews. Entry is free. The baths are a good option for families or people who want a flat-water swim regardless of surf conditions.

Parking at Merewether is bigger than Bar Beach but still fills by mid-morning on summer weekends. The main car park is off Pacific Street.

Dixon Park Beach

Dixon Park Beach

Dixon Park Beach rates 4.6 stars across 450 reviews. It sits between Bar Beach and Merewether, and is the smallest of the three. The beach is around 300 metres long and tends to be quieter than its neighbours on most days.

Dixon Park is a reasonable choice if Bar Beach and Merewether car parks are full. It has toilets and a grassed area behind the beach that works for families. The surf here is similar to Bar Beach: a beach break that picks up the same swells.

Nobbys Beach rates 4.6 stars across 2,100 reviews and sits at the northern end near Nobbys Head Lighthouse.

Both beaches are accessible on foot from Hunter Street and the main Newcastle transport hub. For most day visitors staying in the city, these two beaches are easier to get to than Bar Beach without a car.

Redhead Beach

Redhead Beach

Redhead Beach is about 15 kilometres south of Newcastle CBD and rates 4.7 stars across 890 reviews. It sits at the base of Redhead Bluff, which makes the approach more dramatic than the flatter northern beaches, and the beach is longer and less visited than Merewether.

If you are driving south from Newcastle and want a beach that is noticeably quieter on summer weekends, Redhead is the one to check. There is parking, toilets, and a surf club. The drive takes around 20 minutes from Newcastle CBD.
